Trammers lobby MHKs and MLCs

Final call to retain horse tram tracks in current location

A day before a debate which will help outline the future of the Douglas horse trams on the promenade, a major pressure group has redoubled its efforts to have the tracks left where they are.

The Manx Electric Railway Society has deluged MHKs and MLCs with hundred of e-mails and letters, supporting retaining the present horse tram configuration with double tram tracks in the centre and along the full length of the promenade.

The body says such a move would eliminate many of the planning issues that would have to be assessed if the carriageway structure is altered.

It also comments the former Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne, who lost his seat in September’s General Election, included a proposal to shorten the tramway – something they claim was a factor in his failure to be re-elected.
