New system could succeed MiCards after U-turn extension
Treasury says it is working on a potential payment card system, similar to MiCards, which would eventually replace the scheme.
Towards the end of last year, they'd been due to be withdrawn - a move that prompted significant political pressure, leading government to reverse course and extend their use for a further 12 months.
Ending the scheme had been expected to save around £500,000 a year.
