Tributes paid to Leonard Singer

He was an MHK for Ramsey and an MLC during his political career

Tributes are being paid to Ramsey Commissioner and former MHK and MLC Leonard Singer.

Chair of the local authority Alby Oldham said he was an 'enthusiastic' and 'dedicated' commissioner and served three terms: "On behalf of the Board of Ramsey Town Commissioners I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Leonard's family and friends."

Whilst fellow board member Juan McGuinness said he is 'saddened' by the announcement.

Mr Singer was a councillor in Stockport before moving to the Island in 1989 and he joined Ramsey Commissioners in 1991.

Health Minister and Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper said he 'genuinely cared' about the town and the Island and did 'good work' supporting the Ramsey Cottage Hospital.

Chief Minister Alfred Cannan said: "Leonard Singer was a committed local and national politician who cared deeply for Ramsey and his constituents. He was a strong supporter of Ramsey Cottage Hospital and his contribution will be missed. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

The League of Friends of Ramsey Cottage Hospital says he was 'always striving' to improve the facilities and was 'instrumental' in fighting against reductions in the service levels at the hospital: "Mr Singer was Chairman of the League for over 25 years and during that time had always striven to improve the facilities within the hospital, and the range of services provided at the hospital to the people of the whole island; not just the north.

"He was instrumental in fighting against reductions in the service levels at the hospital. He was the driving force behind the installation of the state of the art 24 hours constant monitoring system in the Martin Ward; something that he advocated being installed in the stroke ward at Nobles.

"He was heartened that Manx Care recognise the value of the hospital and are increasing the range of services provided there and was delighted to officially open the new Alden dermatology suite this year.

"The League of Friends is exactly that; a group of friends; Mr Singer’s leadership and subtle humour will be very much missed at meetings. The League sends its condolences to Caroline and the family.”
