TT organisers act on Mercer crash report

Directors list 'salient changes' for 2019 race management

Organisers of the TT have revealed recommendations made by a crash inquiry will be implemented ahead of the opening day of racing in May.

Along with GPS tracking devices, non-race vehicles such as the course inspection and response car will be fitted with warning lights, the Auto Cycle Union has announced.

A speed limit will also be imposed upon all course cars.

Training has been and will be given to all senior race officials, as well as marshals, which will include guidance on TETRA radio use.

An event safety officer will be appointed, with other changes emphasising rider education on race rules and regulations.

However, TT directors have refused to release the full extent of the report due to 'business sensitivities', but they hope the 'relevant listings' answer 'all questions'.

This 'final statement' comes with just 35 days until practice week, and almost a year on since Kent rider Steve Mercer was involved in an accident with a course car.

The resulting 100mph crash left Mercer in a critical condition with a broken back, from which he is still undergoing a rehabilitation process.

Both ACU Ltd and ACU Events Ltd say they are assisting with his recovery through their 'extensive insurance arrangements'.

Manx Radio has contacted the directors for comment.
