36-year-old described as riding 'like a lunatic'

A TT visitor from Surrey who was caught riding at almost 120 miles per hour has been described in court as a ‘lunatic’.

Oliver Charles Bolan, from Whitmore Vale, was arrested yesterday (25 May) after being caught flouting the 50mph restriction.

A police officer, on an unmarked bike, had followed the 36-year-old through Kirk Michael just after 5pm.

They watched his Honda Fireblade reach speeds of 70mph at Handley’s Corner before Bolan pulled into the opposite carriageway to overtake the traffic in front of him.

Bolan was recorded riding at 118 miles per hour on the Cronk-y-Voddy straight before being stopped at Ballig Bridge by another police officer.

At Douglas Courthouse today (26 May) the company director admitted speeding.

Bolan’s advocate told the court her client wanted to apologise for his ‘irresponsible riding’ adding: "His licence is very important to him."

She added: “He apologises to the officers and to members of the public,” saying he understood what could have happened should ‘something go wrong’.

Fining Bolan £500, and ordering him to pay prosecution costs of £125, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told him he’d been travelling at a ‘mindboggling’ speed.

She added: "If your licence was very important to you then you shouldn’t have driven like a lunatic on our roads.

"Not only could you have killed yourself, you might have injured other people.”

- Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood

Disqualifying Bolan from driving for three months the deputy high bailiff also ordered him to take, and pass, an extended driving test when the ban ends.

Adding that the standard of his driving demonstrated that he needed to take another driving test she told him: “You need to make arrangements to get your bike back to the UK.”
