Tynwald backs £32.6 million overspend on Liverpool Landing Stage

Takes total spend to £70.6 million

Tynwald has approved an additional spend of £32.6 million towards completion of the new Liverpool landing stage.

It takes the total spend so far to around £70.6 million.

The handling of the project by the Department for Infrastructure was roundly criticised in a tense debate lasting around three hours.

Mover of the motion, Infrastructure Minister, Tim Crookall told the court the overspend on the project was nothing short of a disaster, and that stinging criticism of the Department's handling of it by members was justified.

But he warned that to walk away having already spent £40 million would be a big mistake:

Two amendments to the motion were tabled by Speaker of the House of Keys Juan Watterson and Treasury Minister David Ashford - the combined effect of which will be a detailed report to Tynwald from the DoI and a nuts and bolts investigation by the Public Accounts Committee.

Mr Ashford told members that ultimately they faced a single decision:

The tenor of the debate was of an embarrassing debacle, which left members with little choice but to support the motion.

So, the debate may be over, but further examinations of what went wrong will happen further down the road.
