UK man admits to trying to remove criminal property from the Island

Caught with more than £47,000 in secret compartment

A Liverpool man caught with more than £47,000 in a secret compartment in his car has admitted trying to remove criminal property from the Island.

Forty-year-old Thomas William Harrison, of Java Road, appeared at Douglas Courthouse where he admitted the offence.

Police and customs officers spotted Harrison in a Renault Twingo on 24 February at the Sea Terminal in Douglas and stopped him as he was trying to get on the boat.

Harrison appeared extremely nervous and was sick.

Officers smelled cannabis in the vehicle and a drug dog uncovered £47,530 in cash in a secret chamber hidden behind a trapdoor under the front passenger seat.

Harrison was arrested but refused to answer questions during a police interview.

He was committed to the Court of General Gaol Delivery, after the prosecution said it would apply to seize the money, and was remanded in custody until he's sentenced on 19 April.
