UK union official to brief election candidates

Union bosses are to meet with general election candidates next week to demand better employment rights for workers on the Island.

The Isle of Man Trades Union Council is concerned about the lack of legislation to guarantee employees' rights when companies change hands.

In the United Kingdom, regulations known as TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings, Protection of Employment) mean workers don't have to worry about conditions changing if their employer is bought out.

Unions say the Isle of Man should introduce similar rules to protect those moving from one business to another.

RMT national secretary Steve Todd (pictured) will brief election candidates on TUPE next Thursday (September 22), at Transport House in Douglas.

Also attending will be UK officers from the Unite and Nautilus unions, as well as local union representatives.
