Unions praise living wage plans

Proposals recieve a cautious welcome

Plans to introduce a voluntary living wage on the Island have received a cautious welcome from unions.

Head of the TUC Eric Holmes says moves to pay a voluntary £8.61 are positive, but warns this could be undermined by changes to work permit legislation.

He's worried government proposals to relax aspects of the permit system may discourage companies from adopting a living wage by 'flooding the market' with cheap labour.

Mr Holmes says it's important to find a balanced way forward:
