Victoria Street closure to last two weeks

Everything you need to know

The Department of Infrastructure has confirmed that work on the new raised crossing point at the junction of Duke Street is almost complete.

Following this, the road surface across the entire length of Victoria Street will be renewed and CCJ Ltd will fully reconstruct a small section of road either side of the new crossing.

In order to do this, there will be no through traffic down Victoria Street for a two-week period from Sunday 19 March until no later than Sunday 2 April.

The following diversions will be in place:

  • All vehicular traffic coming down Prospect Hill (including scheduled buses) will be diverted along Athol Street
  • Traffic using Ridgeway Street will exit via Prospect Hill only
  • Traffic from Thomas Street (Market Street & Drumgold Street/M&S car park) will be diverted towards Prospect Hill
  • There will be no access to Victoria Street from Thomas street

The taxi rank at the top end of Victoria Street will be moved temporarily to outside Conister Bank at the lower end of Victoria Street.

Cabs will access the rank via the rear lane that links Regent Street and Victoria Street.

Pedestrian access to all premises will be unaffected and pavements either side of the works will remain open.

The road will then fully reopen for a short spell.

Carriageway resurfacing

From 19 April, the Department’s paver team will resurface the remainder of Victoria Street.

This work will be phased.

PHASE 1 - THOMAS STREET JUNCTION TO NEW CROSSING - NIGHT TIME CLOSURES

The carriageway will be resurfaced during a series of evening closures (between Wednesday 19 April  and  Wednesday 26 April), with the road being closed to through traffic from 6.30pm up to 6.30am daily.

To facilitate these works the above diversions will be in place on each evening until the phase of work is complete.

PHASE  2  - RIDGEWAY STREET TO THOMAS STREET JUCTION  - EVENING CLOSURES

The carriageway will be resurfaced during a series of evening closures (between Wednesday 26 April  &  Wednesday 3 May). With the road being closed to through traffic from 6.30pm up to 6.30am nightly.

To facilitate these works the following diversions will be in place on each evening until this phase of work is complete.

  • All vehicular traffic coming down Prospect Hill (including scheduled buses) will be diverted along Athol Street
  • Traffic using Ridgeway Street will exit via Prospect Hill only
  • Traffic from Thomas Street (Market Street & Drumgold Street/M &S car park) will travel in the usual direction down Victoria Street

During Phase 1 and 2 the road will remain open during the day, with traffic flowing normally from Prospect Hill towards Loch Promenade, albeit with a temporary road surface.

As with the crossing works the taxi rank will be relocated for both phases of surfacing.

PHASE 3 - FORT STREET TO LOCH PROMENADE

The lower half of the road is sufficiently wide to allow resurfacing to take place in live traffic, with work being undertaken during normal hours. This work will start on 4 April and take up to 7 days to complete.

To facilitate these works the following arrangements will be in place

  • All parking, bus stops and loading areas will be suspended
  • The working area will be  controlled using crowd barriers, with pedestrians being able to use the pavements on either side of the road
  • A single lane of traffic will be maintained at all times
  • The taxi rank/loading bay at the top of Victoria Street will be restored.

Bus Vannin will be publishing arrangements for temporary bus stops to replace stops affected by these works ahead of commencement of works.
