'Virtual' Tynwald - how will it work?

We hear from two MHKs ahead of extraordinary sitting

With government's social distancing guidelines now being implemented and enforced in the community, today will see the very first 'virtual' Tynwald sitting.

As part of the extraordinary sitting from 10:30 this morning, Howard Quayle and other ministers will make statements.

Clare Barber MHK is one of several Manx politicians who - for different reasons - are self-isolating at home, and therefore not attending Legislative Buildings in Douglas in person for the time being.

It's a busy time for Tynwald members, of course, with lots of legislation and emergency powers being fast-tracked.

Aaron Ibanez asked Mrs Barber how important it is that democracy finds ways to accommodate politicians' situations, in times of emergency:

Juan Watterson is a man who wears several hats in Tynwald.

As well as being Speaker of the House of Keys and Deputy President of Tynwald, he's also Chairman of the Standing Orders Committee and Chairman of the Tynwald Management Committee.
