Wallaby put to sleep after being shot in the head

ManxSPCA appeals for the public's help

A local animal charity has appealed for help identifying the person responsible for shooting a healthy wallaby in the head.

The ManxSPCA says it was called out to a 'distressing welfare incident' at a property in Glen Auldyn last Tuesday (8 March).

The animal had managed to hop to the driveway and then collapse – he was taken to a vet where he was put to sleep due to the extent of his injuries.

Hunting, and shooting, wallabies is not illegal on the Island because they are classed as non-indigenous species and are not protected by the Wildlife Act of 1990.

However the charity says it needs to make sure whoever did this understands the ramifications of using an inappropriate firearm – which wasn't powerful enough to kill the mammal outright – and the pain and suffering they have caused.

Anyone who knows who was responsible is asked to contact the charity directly.
