Warning for wheeler dealers

Garages in the Isle of Man are to be put through a service check of their own.

The Office of Fair Trading wants to make sure consumers aren't being ripped off by mechanics charging for work they don't do or recommending unnecessary repairs.

Officials from the OFT are going to use second hand cars, bikes and commercial vehicles, put them in for a service and then assess the standard of work.

Two years ago a main dealership on the Island was prosecuted for issuing a customer with an invoice for work that hadn't been carried out.

It cost them more than £2000 in fines and legal costs.

OFT Chief Inspector of Standards John Peet (pictured) says the problem nowadays is that people don't fiddle about with their motors themselves:
