Woman hands herself in for driving offence, seven years later

Gillian Ann Connor pleads guilty at Douglas courthouse

A court heard a woman who left the Island after admitting motoring offences handed herself in for sentencing seven years later.

Thirty-three-year-old Gillian Ann Connor of Mona Drive in Douglas appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Christopher Arrowsmith at Douglas Courthouse.

In 2013, she’d pleaded guilty to driving without a valid licence, having an uninsured car and failing to change the vehicle’s ownership documents.

But the court heard she’d moved off the Island before returning recently and contacting an advocate to resolve the outstanding case.

Her advocate told the court Connor had been involved with an abusive and controlling partner at the time – and he’d moved the family to Liverpool before should could appear in court again.

The hearing was told Connor had overcome a serious drug addiction and had returned to the Island to start a new life, including clearing fines she’d owed and handing herself in.

Mr Arrowsmith said she deserved considerable credit after managing to quit drugs and face up to her past.

She was banned from the roads for three months as well as fined £600 and ordered to pay £50 towards prosecution costs.
