Word to the wise for Tynwald petitioners

Lobbyists advised to prepare early

Manx residents who want to exercise their ancient right to petition parliament, are being urged to prepare well in advance.

Petitions for Redress, where members of the public seek politicians' help in righting a wrong, are presented each July at the Tynwald Day ceremony.

However, there are strict rules on how petitions should be drawn-up and the procedure to be followed.

Potential petitioners are being advised to contact the Clerk of Tynwald's office before they write or submit their documents.

Detailed guidance on how to raise a grievance through a petition has been posted on the Tynwald website.

There are examples of previous petitions, and an outline of what happens after a petition is handed in at St John's.

Petitions can lead to motions in Tynwald and ultimately, changes in policy and the law of the land.

However, the process is not quick and cannot deliver any benefit to the petitioner in damages or compensation, or lead to a person being fined or published.

An individual's right to petition Tynwald is thought to have existed from the 1600's - the process has not yet embraced technology to allow for e-petitions.

Petitioners should gather at the Lych Gate on Tynwald Hill at 10.15am on 5 July.
