DED looks to Tynwald for exemption
Overseas workers in the ICT and e-business sectors may no longer need work permits.
It's thought an additional 100 skilled employees will be required for roles in e-business for the foreseeable future.
Government figures show the industry - which includes e-gaming - contributes around 25 per cent of the Island's National Income.
The Department of Economic Development says it feels the high number of work permits received for vacancies in the industries show not enough local employees are suitably skilled.
It's now seeking Tynwald approval to exempt individuals earning more than £25,000 a year - as long as the incoming worker is on a contract longer than 12 months.
Experience will be needed to qualify for the exemption - a minimum of 3 years for roles in ICT and a minimum of 2 years if entering the e-business sector.
The DED says it's also working with the Department of Education and Children to boost local education and training in computing.
