Manx Radio visits site of new sewage treatment works

Work to end the discharge of raw sewage into the sea at Peel is progressing well towards a final completion date in 2028.

Contractors Eric Wright Water and local company Paul Carey & Sons Ltd have commenced work on land off the Glenfaba Road where the main treatment plant will be created.

Despite the final completion being some way off, people will see a significant improvement in bathing water quality long before then.

Simon Richardson visited the site where Manx Utilities chairman, John Wannenburgh, officially turned the first sod:

One person very happy to see the project in Peel finally underway is long-serving Commissioner Christine Moughtin, who says it's a dream come true:

It's fair to say that the project to clean up the sea in Peel bay has pretty much universal approval.

Ray Harmer is a Peel Town Commissioner and a former MHK for the area:

A current MHK for Peel is Tim Crookall. He says the topic of sewer discharges into the sea at Peel has been one of the key election topics in the area for many years:

So, a timeline has finally been set to provide one of the Island's top beaches with clean bathing water.

With the people of Peel celebrating the end of sewage discharges into the sea, the focus will turn to Laxey.
