SMART Family and Friends event hosted by Motiv8 this Saturday

A special workshop is being held in Douglas on Saturday (21 March)  for anyone impacted by someone else’s dependency or dependent behaviours surrounding alcohol, drugs, gambling and gaming.

Manx charity Motiv8 Addiction Services is running the event to offer 'practical tools and a safe, supportive space' for attendees.

It will take place between 10am and 3pm at the charity's headquarters on Woodbourne Road.

Free and confidential, the charity says the SMART Family & Friends workshop has been specifically scheduled on a weekend to allow more people to attend who may be unable to access support during the working week.

The charity's Operations Manager, Caroline Coole, and Fundraiser, Nicola Browne, explain what's involved in the day and why they host these type of events:

The workshop's morning session will focus on providing 'practical strategies' to help people better understand behaviours, improve communication and manage challenging situations within the home.

In the afternoon, the charity says attendees will have the opportunity to 'listen to others, discuss shared experiences and explore scenarios that may resonate with their own lives'.

Then, the day will end with a short relaxation session with optional auricular acupuncture, which Motiv8 says will offer guests the chance to 'learn simple techniques to help reduce stress and promote calm in what can often be difficult circumstances'.

Previous attendees of Motiv8's Family and Friends workshop said: "There are some really useful tools around dealing with addiction, but also for general use in day to day life. It also shows your loved one that you are showing support and willing to learn and help them overcome their addiction."

Another added: "The Family and Friends workshops have bought together people who often suffer in isolation and when we gather in a group it helps to know we're not alone."
