All to play for in Powerboat Championship

It’s still all to play for as competitors head into the final rounds of the 2009 Honda Formula 4 Stroke Association Powerboat Championship.

Three races were held in Douglas Bay yesterday on the first day of the Isle of Man Grand Prix.

In the 225 races, Team Williams took maximum points as they scored a double victory to close the gap on current Championship leaders Lings.com.

The crew led from start to finish with driver Scott Williams and navigator Ken Williams closing the gap at the top of the championship to just nine points.

The husband and wife crew of Rupert and Sophie Pugh in Heights of Abrahams had a solid run into second place with Hampshire’s Double Six, crewed by Brian Caudwell and Sean Massey, completing the top three.

There was disappointment for Isle of Man crew, brothers Michael and Stephen Baggs from Team Vortigern, who thought they had won the second 225 race only to be later disqualified after a jump start infringement.

In the end, Team Williams finished ahead of Lings.com with Heights of Abrahams in third.

The Premier Cru pairing of John Wilson and Neil Scarborough maintained their lead in the 150 class after a faultless display in the opening 150 race – much to Scarborough’s delight.

Reigning champions Hydrex managed to leapfrog their way to second with Team Williams in third.
