Island Games day three: ten medals including five gold

It's been another successful day in Guernsey for Team Isle of Man

Team Isle of Man won five gold, one silver and four bronze medals on day three of the Island Games in Guernsey.

In the swimming pool, Peter Allen won two gold medals in the men’s 50m butterfly and 200m freestyle setting all-comers records for the Beau Sejour pool in both events. He was also part of the men’s 4x50m medley relay team along with Carrick Thompson, Benjamin Kebbell and Joel Watterson who took silver.

At the Footes Lane athletics track, Rachael Franklin won gold in the women’s 1,500m setting  a new Island Games record of 4:20.42. Joe Harris won gold in the men’s javelin, throwing a distance of 68.95m. Aimee Christian bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles, narrowly beating teammate Catherine Perry who came fourth.

The Isle of Man’s first medals of the day came from the mountain biking criterium. Sacha Horsthuis and Kirree Quayle won gold in the team event and Quayle won gold in the individual competition. In the men’s event, the team made up of Elliot Baxter, Owen Collins, Eric Kelly, Alex Rockwell and Ross Thorley secured bronze.

In the archery, Aalin George and Rhys Moore won bronze in the compound mixed pairs head to head knockout.

Elsewhere today, the Isle of Man placed tenth in the table tennis group competition following a win against Shetland and defeat to Gibrlatar.

Manx tennis singles hopes rest with Anna Kirk who’s made it through to the quarter-finals of the women’s competition. Sean Drewry and Orry Farnworth and Karen Faragher and Sarah Long are through to the quarter-finals of the men’s and women’s doubles. There are two Manx pairs in the mixed doubles semi-finals. Anna Kirk and Sean Drewry will play a Cayman Islands team whilst Marc Chinn and Karen Faragher face hosts Guernsey.

In Badminton, Tobey Cheng and Jessica Li are through to the men’s and women’s singles Rounds of 16. Matthew Nicholson and Tobey Cheng and Neil Harding and Steven Quayle are both in the men’s doubles quarter-finals and Jessica Li and Kimberley Clague and Philippa Li and Mia Kirk are in the women’s doubles quarter finals.

In shooting, Wes Reed made it through to the final of the men’s 10m air rifle competition and finished in 6th place.

In basketball, the Manx men lost to Menorca 114-55 and in football, Ynys Mon beat the Isle of Man 2-1.
