More medals for cyclists at NatWest Island Games

Ellen Barker takes silver in road race

Manx cyclists missed out on golds by the narrowest of margins in the road races at the NatWest Island Games in Gibraltar yesterday, the penultimate day of competition.

Nathan Draper was beaten by just 0.67 seconds in a thrilling bunch sprint finish in the men's race, while Ellie Barker finished just 0.14 seconds behind the winner in the women's.

Adam Scarffe was also in the mix in the men's, finishing fifth (0.94 seconds back), while William Corkill was 10th, Thomas Bostock 13th, and Matt Looker 20th.

That was enough to take team silver as well.

Ellie Barker's silver was her second individual medal of the Games.

Barker was second to Jersey’s Florence Cox, but the efforts of the other Manx competitors ensured another team silver was won.

Time trial winner Becky Storrie ended the road race fifth, while Kathryn Priest, Emily Looker and Tara Ferguson finished in seventh, ninth and 15th respectively.

In the swimming, there was a gold for the women’s 4x100m medley relay team, capping off a brilliant week in the pool.

There are chances for further medals for Team IOM today, as the athletics team and the women’s basketballers aim to finish the 2019 Games on a high.

Going into the final day, the Isle of Man sit in second place in the medals table with 22 golds, 18 silvers and 14 bronzes - five golds behind Jersey.
