More than 500 take part in marathon

Amend smashes women's record by more than 13 minutes

Just over 500 competitors took part in the Microgaming Isle of Man Marathon and Half-Marathon over the weekend.

The event was held on a 13.2 mile course in the north of the Island - the race headquarters was at Ramsey Football Club's Ballacloan Stadium on the outskirts of Mooragh Park.

Phil Martin won the marathon with a time of 2:36:42; ahead of Paul Whitaker and Gordy Smith in second and third respectively.

Tim Kennedy was the winner in the half-marathon with a time just over one hour and 15 minutes (1:16:44).

Samantha Amend, who won the women's race, smashed the course record by 13 minutes and 38 seconds - or half a minute mile.

In finishing 5th, she equalled the best overall finish by a woman which had been posted by previous record holder, Rebecca Johnson in 2008.
