New year but no cup shocks

There were no shocks in the preliminary round of the Cu-Plas FA Cup, although runaway Division Two leaders St John’s showed their potential with a 6-0 demolition of Premier League side Douglas Royal.

A Steven Glover hat-trick caused most of the damage and player-manager Nick Hurt also found the net after Andy Glover opened the scoring and substitute Mark Wolfenden completed it with the pick of the goals.

Rob Callow was the match-winner as Onchan ended Colby’s cup hopes with the only goal at Onchan Stadium, while Foxdale were pushed hard by Douglas and District before winning 4-1 after extra-time at Groves Road.

Liam Harrison, Ricky Newsham, Robbie Jack and Andy Morrison grabbed the goals for Foxdale.

Last year’s beaten finalists Rushen United overcame a battling showing from Division Two Ronaldsway, winning 3-0 at Croit Lowey courtesy of goals from Adam Cregeen and Josh Kelly (two).

Laxey won the big all-Premier League clash with goals from Ashley Webster and Lee Cowley securing a 2-1 home win over Ramsey, who replied through a John Leece penalty, while Alex Crawley, Tom Callister and Mike Williams grabbed the goals as Castletown won 3-1 at Michael in the other top flight cup clash.

Promotion chasing Union Mills had too much for Pulrose with a 4-1 win at Garey Mooar.

David Thomenny, Gareth Logan, Sreven Quine and Steve Halsall were the marksmen with Mike Skillen netting the Pulrose consolation.

Braddan took charge of their clash with Marown.

After a goalless first half, a James Cain penalty and goals from Adam Dooley and James Murphy sealed their progress with Jeremy Lovett scoring a last minute consolation penalty for Marown.

Goals from Nigel Moody (two), Darren Cain, Danny Gerrard, Chris Cannell and Max Kneale fired Corinthians to a 6-1 win at Malew.
