Stoppage-time comeback seals Laxey’s Great Escape

Laxey fight from 2-0 down to beat the drop

Tom Cowin scored with seconds remaining to complete a sensational comeback as Laxey beat St Johns 3-2 at Mullen-e-Cloie to climb off the bottom of the Canada Life Premier League and beat the drop.

The hosts led at the break after Harry Rothwell had given St Johns an early lead in the crucial battle at the bottom.

Jamie Crook doubled their advantage five minutes after the re-start as they looked set to retain their top flight status for another year.

The Miners clawed one back through Stan Manning, before Michael Fernandes levelled to set-up a grandstand finish.

As the match appeared to be heading towards a stalemate, Tom Cowin was on hand to secure an historic win as Laxey lifted themselves out of the drop zone and safe from relegation to the second tier.

The 3-2 defeat for St Johns, meanwhile, sees them needing a point from their final game of the season against Douglas Royal to avoid playing JCK Division Two football next term.

Royal slipped to the foot of the table on goal difference after they failed to field a team against St Georges, who move into second place after Peel all but ended their title challenge with a 3-0 defeat away at Corinthians.

St Marys edged one step closer to being crowned champions as they thrashed Old Boys 6-1 at Blackberry Lane.
