Thompson double sinks Vagabonds

Two tries from former Vagabond Daryn Thompson gave his new club Douglas the honours in the first “old firm” game of the 2012/13 season as Douglas won 32-22 at Ballafletcher.

Douglas were pretty much in charge from start to finish. Thompson’s first and a try from Liam King gave Douglas an early advantage and with a Scott Goodall conversion they were 12-0 up after twenty minutes. Vagas fought back though and a try from Ross McCulloch plus a penalty and conversion from Johnny Beckley left the game finely balanced 12-10 at half time.

In the second half it was pretty much tit for tat for much of the play. Ryan Maddox put Douglas in further ahead. Ross McCulloch’s second got Vagas back on track and when Sam Liver crossed midway through the half, Vagas were briefly in front. Douglas dug deep and tries from Niall Killey and Daryn Thompson’s second gave them a seven point lead and the try bonus point. As Vagabonds chased the game, Bryn Snellgrove fired over a long range drop goal to make the game safe and deny Vagabonds even a losing bonus point.

Ramsey get much needed win
Beleaguered Ramsey picked up a useful bonus point win at Mooragh Park beating Moore 28-14.

Davide Mazzone’s men trailed 18-14 at half time after Tynan Pritchard and Lance Wyllie had given them a good start. The rallied in the second half though and further tries from Chris King and Tynan Pritchard got them clear. Andy Cleator and Fintan Cummins both kicked penalties for Ramsey with Cleator also bagging a conversion.

Western Vikings hammer Emerging Nomads
The men from Peel were on top form in the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield beating Emerging Nomads 50-17 at QE2.
Vikings vice captain Paul Wheeldon picked up a hat trick of tries with other scores coming from Sam Radcliffe (2), Jonathan Crellin, James Watson and Paul Gale. Mark Venables kicked five conversions.

In the other Manx Shield game, eleven man Ramsey conceded to champions Southern Nomads but still played in a friendly at King Williams College in a game marred by a knee injury to Nomads prop Tom Davies. Get well soon Tom!
