Town and Cronkbourne upset the odds

Castletown and Cronkbourne have upset the odds to reach the final of the Standard Bank League Cup.

In yesterday’s (Sunday) semi-finals, they swept aside favourites St John’s and Ramsey to set up an exciting clash to end the season.

A splendid bowling performance by Castletown dismissed St John’s for 94. Travis Friend took three for 15 and a fiery Garreth Roome claimed four for 29.

Then Friend with 36 and skipper Wicus Wessels, who hit 25, helped the Town to victory.

There were a few scares along the way but the southerners reached their target for the loss of five wickets.

In the north, the Cronkbourne batsmen had a field day.

Paul Haswell hit an aggressive 91 as the Douglas side raced to 254 for eight. Adam McAuley gave good support with 33 while Charlie Whipp ended with three for 46.

In reply, the northerners lost both openers for 20 but battled on. Jamie Moffatt scored 38 and Ashley Webster hit 47, but the Cronkbourne bowlers were well on top.

Zaeem Jafri took three wickets and Andy Vels two as Ramsey ended on 158 all out from 38 overs.

The final of the League Cup will be at Tromode on Sunday, September 18, with an 11am start.
