Vikings victorious at thriller in the Villa

Viking Boxing Club's members put in some impressive displays at the Villa Marina on Saturday evening.

They won 7-3 against the Ballymoney Club in an event organised through the twinning arrangement between Douglas and the Irish town.

Performance of the night came from welterweight Stephen Pownall, who destroyed his opponent, Irish National Champion Danny Rainey.

Rainey had never been put on his back in 30 bouts but Pownall caught him with a devastating uppercut in the first round to score a knockout victory.

There was also an impressive showing from senior welterweight Dave Crellin, who claimed a first round stoppage against Norman Park.

Junior welterweight Michael Keeling and junior light heavyweight Danny Linehan took points victories to complete an impressive second half of the bill for the Manx outfit.

Earlier, after a delayed start due to fog-bound planes the show began with Manx boxer Alex Lawrence competing against Jake Whittaker of Ballymoney, who got a close points win.

Douglas schoolboy Liam Caighin, the first of Viking's three boxers making their debut, had a close points loss against Ryan Wallace.

Next debutant Jake Moore scored a unanimous points victory.

The final one, Jared Collister, gave a lot of height away to his opponent Connal McKay and lost a majority points decision.
