Leigh Leopards and Wigan Warriors will be subject to an independent investigation into their conduct and actions over the past 12 months, the Rugby Football League (RFL) has said.

The Leopards and the Warriors have had an ongoing dispute for almost 12 months, dating back to the high-profile ticketing saga that led to Leigh's owner Derek Beaumont saying his club would not participate in the fixture over a disagreement about their ticket allocation of 4,800.

They ultimately did play the game and were eliminated from the play-offs with Wigan winning 18-6.

With the Warriors set to host Wakefield in the play-off semi-final on Saturday, matters reignited again over the weekend after an original post from Wigan detailed ticketing arrangements for whichever side visited the Brick this weekend in the play-offs would receive an allocation of 5,000 tickets for safety reasons.

Leigh were beaten by Wakefield Trinity in their eliminator match, where a win for the Leopards would have seen them progress to face Wigan instead.

Beaumont put himself in the spotlight again with a tirade on social media site X following Wigan's statement and his activity could also breach the RFL's own social media code of conduct.

The RFL said in a statement: "The independent Rugby Football League and RL Commercial Boards have issued a letter to both Leigh Leopards RLFC and Wigan Warriors RLFC advising them there will be an independent investigation into the conduct and actions of both clubs and the governing body in relation to matters extending over the last 12 months.

"The RFL and RL Commercial will not make any further comment until the investigation is complete."

Wigan finished top of the Super League regular season table, while Leigh finished fifth.
