MANX NEWSCAST:

  • Is the idea of future exploration for hydrocarbons dead in the water?

It's been 10 months since Crogga's licence to extract gas from an area off the Island's coast expired. And now, a bid in Tynwald for government to invite applications for a fresh hydrocarbons exploration has been squashed by the Island's lawmakers. In the sitting of parliament this week, Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas called for a report with recommendations for debate and decision to be brought back by July next year. But he didn't get the backing of the court - as Siobhán Fletcher reports.

AGENDA:

  • Agenda 8.12.25 - why do we need new extradition legislation and good news from the MUA

The Extradition Bill 2025 is making its way through the legislative process and for all but a handful of people its impact on our lives will be minimal. So why do we need this legislation? Well, according to the notes on the Bill, no one should be able to escape justice simply by crossing a border, and our current extradition law relies on a largely repealed piece of dated UK legislation. In other news the electricity inter-connector is 25 years old and during its life 25 billion units of electricity have been exported to the UK providing the MUA with an £80 million profit. Exporting electricity and criminals - some good news at last.

PERSPECTIVE:

  • Perspective 7.12.25 - why is LegCo trying to pacify local authorities and does government really not know what it owns?

You may have noticed that local authorities have been sharpening their pitchforks and gathering fiery brands as they attempt to oppose a new piece of law which would give government power to impose functions and standards on them. Government’s position appears to be that local Commissioners and Councillors shouldn’t be able to shirk their statutory responsibilities and Legislative Council has been drafted in to try to broker the peace. Also, a Tynwald committee is gently nudging government to properly register all the land it owns. Does government know what it owns? Pitchforks at dawn on a misty field that may or may not belong to government. A Perspective not to be missed.
