More than 80 guests raised their glasses to celebrate the official opening of a new restaurant at Jaks Bar and Steak House in Douglas, post-TT (13 June).

An investment of more than £0.5 million has seen a major expansion into the first floor of the building on Loch Promenade, where two former apartments have been converted into a 110-cover restaurant offering diners stunning views over Douglas Bay.

The overhaul - which has used 50 tons of steel - returns the upper floor of the former hotel to dining room use, its role before conversion into apartments 23 years ago, when current directors Andrew Gibbs and Keith Bernard moved in!

Since that time the pair have cornered the market locally in screening live football from the street level bar and established A&J Butchers in Douglas to ensure a bespoke supply of meat.

The gradual demise of the traditional drinks-only pub means food is now big business, as Andrew Gibbs explained:
