Chamber of Commerce backs Bell's call to improve " shabby Douglas"

The Chamber of Commerce has joined in the debate on the state of Douglas with their preferred route for renovation being firstly "partnership" but also a sort of "rolling programme" of works, not depended on a vast, one-off expenditure

They have released a statement:
"The Chamber of Commerce fully supports the position of the Treasury Minister on the urgent need for improvement and regeneration of Douglas Town Centre. Undoubtedly the necessary works will significantly benefit business undertaken with the town across all the business sectors and will improve the town’s offering to both residents and visitors alike.



The Chamber acknowledges the progressive strategies of Central Government which have created a business environment which is attractive across a broad range of finance and other business sectors. These strategies have underpinned the dramatic growth of the economy over the past two decades. However during this time the physical environment of Douglas has not moved with the times and now requires significant investment . The notable exception is North Quay which is a shining example of what working in partnership can achieve for the environment and the benefit of everyone.



The Chamber applauds Douglas Corporation for their far-sighted decision to employ environmental consultants, Encams, to benchmark Douglas against equivalent towns in terms of quality of the environment. Encams are also assisting the Corporation with setting out a programme of improvements.



The Chamber looks forward to working with all parties – Departments of Central Government, Douglas Corporation and Douglas Development Partnership – with the specific goal of delivering a quality, physical environment within Douglas Town Centre and a capital town for the Isle of Man of which we can all be proud".
