Changes could allow newspapers to own radio stations

Views sought on proposed amendment to Broadcasting Act 1993

Newspaper publishers could soon be allowed to own radio stations, if the law is changed.

Under the Broadcasting Act 1993, newspaper owners can hold up to 20% of a licensed broadcaster.

Isle of Man Newspapers has asked the Council of Ministers to change the law, and says it has a potential interest in acquiring a radio station.

The organisation argues current ownership restrictions are out of date.

It says the move would ensure future sustainability of the media sector.

Proposals would also enable radio stations to own newspapers.

Government wants to hear the views of interested parties and members of the public.

The consultation is open until 21 September.
