A local cyclist is gearing up for an epic 2,000-kilometre journey across Europe—all in support of Isle of Man sight loss charity Sight Matters.
David Hogg will set off from Pisa on Italy’s Mediterranean coast before cycling all the way back to the Island, finishing in Peel after around 15 days on the road. Covering roughly 1,250 miles, the solo challenge will see him carry all his gear as he travels through 11 countries.
His route will wind north across mainland Europe to the Hook of Holland, before crossing to the UK and continuing via Liverpool and Douglas—finally making the short hop across to Peel.
It’s not his first endurance challenge. Previous rides include Bordeaux to Barcelona, Land’s End to John O’Groats, and even an attempt to set a world record crossing the Grande Route des Alpes on a folding bike—so he knows exactly what he’s in for.
Training is already in full swing, with weekly mileage climbing towards 150 miles as July approaches.
The journey is set to begin shortly after Tynwald Day, with a planned start date of 14 July, and a hopeful return to Peel around two weeks later.
Supporters will be able to follow every step—or pedal—of the journey online. A dedicated Facebook page will be used to share blogs, vlogs and regular updates in the lead-up to and throughout the challenge.
