Hint at new film arrangement

A new agreement is being negotiated to make the most from the Manx film industry, in the wake of the new revenue sharing arrangement with the United Kingdom.

In the last 15 years the Isle of Man has done very well out of the industry, due in no small part to the efforts and skill of those involved. The new arrangement with the UK, made public in the Spring Budget, puts the Island on a rather different footing. So it seems the way it funds and reaps the rewards from the film Industry, currently enjoying a quiet period, has to change as well.

Tynwald members would have been given the run down on this already had it not been for the MEA briefing taking up the time. All we think we know at the moment, from an aside remark by Onchan MHK Peter Karran, is that the firm involved is Cinemax, an arm of Time Warner.

Sketching in some of the detail, Treasury Minister Allan Bell (pictured) today urged caution from members of Tynwald, while negotiations were ongoing:
