Move to assist ICT and e-biz sector
An relaxation of work permit rules sanctioned in Tynwald this week is expected to ease the shortage of skilled workers in the Island's ICT and e-business sectors.
An exemption order will allow suitably qualified, skilled or experienced workers commanding salaries of £25,000 or more, to take up positions without the need to apply for a work permit.
The contribution of e-business towards national income is put at 25% and the sector currently employs 1700 people.
Government says an additional 100 skilled workers will be required in these areas each year 'for the foreseeable future'.
While ICT education and training have been rising up the agenda, the move addresses what is described as an 'urgent' shortage now.
Work permit legislation is designed to protect Manx workers, but permit requirements have been waived in recent years for posts in teaching, social work, health and midwifery.
