A Manx-owned chemical tanker has been hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia.
The MT Bow Asir is owned by Star Tankers Ltd, a company registered in St. George's Court in Upper Church Street, Douglas.
It was taken over by a group of 16 to 18 pirates at 7.45am today when they overpowered the crew of 27 and the vessel's Norwegian captain.
The ship was built in 1982, sails under a Bahamas flag and is managed by Norway's Salhus Shipping.
Poland's Foreign Ministry says five sailors aboard the vessel are Polish, and the government is in constant contact with the ship's owner.
