Charity transports hope to community

A Manx charity has begun its latest aid mission to an impoverished community in Romania - with help from the Steam Packet Company.

Hands of Hope makes several trips each year to Dorohoi, an area of Romania roughly the same size as the Isle of Man, to offer practical help to families living in poverty.

The charity was set up in 2005 by Ruth and Chris Baker after they visited an orphanage in the region and decided they wanted to help.

SPC has covered the costs of transporting an aid truck, containing food parcels, clothes, shoes and educational materials, along with IT equipment for the charity's community centre.

Hands of Hope is working with partner charity Lumina Pentru Copii (Light for Children) to build homes for families, after discovering many of the children were not true orphans, but had been abandoned because their parents felt they would be better off in an orphanage then with them.

Packet Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: "Hands of Hope is a small but hard working charity which we've been pleased to help over the years. They are doing important work helping families living in poverty to stay together."
