Steam Packet helps power van trip for Billy

Billy Redmayne

Charity trek's road racing resonance

The Steam Packet is the latest backer of an ambitious adventure in aid of humanity, and in memory of two motorcycling legends.

Laxey boy Billy Redmayne's life was tragically cut short in Scarborough earlier this year - and three former Manx Grand Prix stars are carrying his name all the way to Romania later this month.

A van, emblazoned with Billy's name and stuffed full of clothes, children's toys and supplies, is setting off from Douglas on 21 October, to make a special delivery to the nation's most impoverished areas.

It's being driven by Jim Hunter, Ian Pert and Russ Henley - and it's a journey inspired by 'Yer Maun' Joey Dunlop, who regularly made similar trips to the Balkans during his lifetime.

The trio have set up a page on fundraising site JustGiving - any money beyond the cost of the trip will go straight to the Billly Redmayne Memorial Fund.

The Steam Packet is covering the Isle of Man-UK legs of their epic journey.

Chief Executive Mark Woodward wished the trio a safe journey and 'great success' in exceeding their target of £2,500.

We can also report that the target has been smashed - as of last night (10 October) more than £3,500 had been raised!
