SPC support for 'inspirational' tour

The stRIDE 17 team

Summer odyssey for female cycle team

The Steam Packet Company is to support a women's cycle challenge this summer, raising money for local and UK dementia charities, and awareness of the condition.

A team of 12 will cycle through England, the Isle of Man and Wales for eight days in August in a journey named stRIDE 17 - their transportation costs being met by the ferry operator.

The three-part challenge starts in Liverpool and heads to the Lake District, before the team returns to Douglas via Heysham.

The team will ride a route around the Island before sailing to Liverpool the next day for the final leg of the journey through north Wales to Shrewsbury.

stRIDE 17 is being organised by Virginia Bailey whose father has vascular dementia, to promote the message an active, healthy lifestyle can contribute to preventing the onset of dementia.

SPC Chief Executive Mark Woodward said the company was pleased to "do its bit" to support the women, adding: "I hope people in the Isle of Man will lend their support perhaps jumping on their bikes to ride alongside the stRIDE 17 team."
