10 points for man caught in car whilst under influence of cannabis

29-year-old also fined £950

A Douglas man has had his driving licence endorsed with 10 penalty points after being caught in charge of a vehicle whilst under the influence of cannabis.

Police on patrol, on Battery Pier in Douglas, saw Jamie Shanahan sitting in his car at 10.40pm on 13 April – they smelt cannabis and carried out a drug wipe test which returned a positive result.

The 29-year-old, who lives on Peel Road, was arrested and his Ford Focus was searched – officers recovered 4.2 grams of the drug which had a street value of £84.

At Douglas Courthouse Shanahan admitted being in charge of a vehicle whilst over the drug drive limit and possessing cannabis.

The court heard he was more than double the legal limit with High Bailiff Jayne Hughes telling him: “You’ve lost your good character as a result of these convictions.”

Warning him he would have to drive ‘very carefully’ due to his points tally she also fined him £950 and ordered him to pay £125 in prosecution costs.
