£1,250 fine for man who grew cannabis to ease anxiety

Police executed warrant at 53-year-old's farm

A Glen Maye man who admitted growing cannabis to ease his anxiety and depression has been fined £1,250.

Fifty-three-year-old Shaun Yates, of Sound Road, appeared at Douglas Courthouse where he admitted cultivating cannabis plants, and possessing the drug, on 19 May.

Police had executed a warrant at the self-employed builder's farm that morning.

In outbuidings they found a grow tent and lighting system, six plants and what officers described as a wind turbine which later turned out to be a fan.

Also discovered were a number of glass jars containing cannabis – in total police estimated they'd found just under £4,000 worth of the class B drug.

When arrested Yates told officers it was for his personal use to help relieve his mental health problems.

Yates was also ordered to pay £50 towards prosecution costs.
