Figures contribute to 5-percent increase across all RNLI operations
New data from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution has revealed lifeboats were launched in the Isle of Man 42 times in 2022, with volunteer crews saving two lives.
Figures show RNLI lifeboats launched more than 9,300 times last year – an increase of five-percent.
Port St Mary was the busiest station launching 12 times.
Crews from Douglas and Peel both launched 10 times; with over half of those in darkness.
Ramsey dispatched a lifeboat eight times, and Port Erin twice.
By comparison, the Island saw a fall in the number of call outs on the previous year, down from 48.
The organisation is challenging members of the public to take part in a ‘Mayday Mile’ – whereby residents are required to cover a mile each day by either walking, running, skipping or swimming.
Money raised will go towards ‘vital’ training and equipment required to keep volunteer crews safe.
Regional Engagement Lead for the Isle of Man Faye Maher says: “We need to be ready. Training, kit, stations, fuel are just some of the things we need to save lives, and that your fundraising can help provide.”
