£600 fine for man who was 'highly aggressive' during arrest

38-year-old admits resisting police officers

A Douglas man has been fined £600 after becoming ‘highly aggressive’ whilst being arrested.

James Marcus Doherty, of Marathon Drive, resisted a police officer in the execution of their duty on 14 May.

Police were called to a property in Douglas just before 4.30am to reports of a domestic dispute – they could hear a man shouting and a woman crying.

The 38-year-old was said to be ‘agitated’ and intoxicated – he became aggressive and abusive and started shouting at the officers telling them to leave.

When a sergeant went to arrest and handcuff him, on suspicion of another offence, Doherty began lashing out and PAVA spray had to be used to detain him.

At Douglas Courthouse last week Doherty’s advocate told the court he’d been upset because he didn’t think he’d done anything wrong: “They had jumped to the wrong conclusion about what had gone on in that address,” he added.

Magistrates ordered Doherty to pay £125 in prosecution costs telling him: “We don’t want to see you back here.”
