Douglas Council to keep non-Christmas lights up until February

Local authority says it can have a 'positive' impact on residents' wellbeing 

Douglas City Council says it will be retaining 'selected decorative lighting displays' beyond the festive period.

The local authority confirmed Christmas specific lights will be switched off as part of its regular schedule.

It claims there was an 'inaccurate media' report which didn't 'accurately reflect' the decision recorded in its minutes.

The council says the scheme can have a 'positive contribution' to the wellbeing of residents and bring 'vibrancy' to public spaces during the winter months.

Leader Devon Watson said: "The council is disappointed that recent reporting did not accurately reflect the decision recorded in the committee minutes.

"At no stage has the council proposed leaving Christmas lights switched on until February.

"What has been agreed is the retention of some decorative lighting features beyond the festive season, using alternative seasonal displays that are appropriate for January and February."

Under the new scheme, decorative lighting installed on Ridgeway Street, Victoria Street, Windsor Road, The Terrace, North and South Quay, Douglas Head, The Drives and Victoria Road will remain in place beyond the Christmas period.
