£900 fine for man who became disorderly in bar

A Douglas man has been fined £900 after headbutting and punching someone in a nightclub at the start of the year.

Benjamin James Canning, of Vicarage Mews, appeared at Douglas Courthouse where he admitted being disorderly on licenced premises.

Police were called to 1886 Bar and Grill, on Regent Street, just after 11pm on 29 January after Canning had become involved in a fight; the other person didn’t make a complaint.

Canning was arrested and in interview, some months later, told police he’d drunk excessively and couldn’t recall the altercation adding he was ashamed of his actions.

The prosecutor told the court: “It was a simple case of drink in, sense out.”

Fining the 28-year-old, and ordering him to pay £50 in prosecution costs, Magistrates told him: “It’s something we take very seriously. You should have simply walked away.

“You’re very lucky you’re not on a more serious charge. If you’re going out again be more sensible – don’t come through those (court) doors again.”
