Abortion reforms move a step closer

Draft legislation moves to third reading

Reforms to the Island's abortion laws have moved a step closer in the House of Keys today (24 April)

MHKs have now completed the consideration of clauses stage of Dr Alex Allinson's private members bill.

Members this morning debated the details of 'access zones', designed to protect those seeking or providing abortion services from 'intimidation and harassment', as well as the legislative impact of defining a person's 'health'.

Early in the sitting, Ayre and Michael MHK Alfred Cannan requested an adjournment of a week to allow for the Attorney General to offer advice on whether the draft bill was compliant.

The legislation will now move on to third reading.
