All-Island yellow weather warning in place

Warning is in place until 3pm Saturday

A yellow weather warning is currently in place for the entire Isle of Man, until 3pm tomorrow.

Further scattered wintry showers are expected tonight, especially over northern half of the Island.

Slight accumulations (1-3 cm) will be mainly on high ground, above about 700 feet, although any hail showers overnight could leave small amounts in places lower down.

Later tomorrow morning the wintry showers will become generally isolated, but a risk of ice will be present on road surfaces on high ground throughout the warning period.

As a result of the cold weather today, the Department of Infrastructure confirmed it has been forced to extend a temporary restriction on the A36 Ballakillowey Road for a further week.

It's due to an inch of snow on the ground on the site, which has delayed the final lay of asphalt.

Elsewhere, Highway Services confirmed several roads will be gritted from 5:30am tomorrow morning (Saturday 10 December):

  • A1 Douglas to Peel
  • A3 Foxdale to Kirk Michael
  • A2 Ramsey to Onchan Coast Road
  • A5 Fort North roundabout to Ronaldsway Airport
  • A24 Fort North to Foxdale (Cooil Road & Foxdale Road)
  • A18 Mountain Road

They stated that the Department's duty officer will re-assess the need for any further work as the weekend progresses.

In response to a number of questions about how the service decides where and when to grit, the Department posted a lengthy statement on Facebook:

Tomorrow's Santa's on a Bike fundraising event has been cancelled due to the weather forecast.

Organisers announced the decision earlier this afternoon:

The announcement was met with praise from members of the public, who suggested that people still donate regardless.

In response, organisers said: "We are still completely overwhelmed by the support, the effort and the amount of happiness Santa’s on a Bike brings to the island!

"We'd like to thank everyone involved, to everyone who was due to ride, who donated, who supported us, thank you to everyone of you and thank you for understanding our decision to cancel this year's event."

They confirmed the event will go ahead as normal next year.
