Ambulance service experiences 'busiest day' in its history

'Exceptional day' sees high volume of calls and 'complex incidents'

The Island's ambulance service says it experienced what is thought to have been the busiest day in its history this week.

Crews responded to an exceptionally high volume of calls and 'complex incidents' on Tuesday (17 February).

The service has thanked staff across the organisation, as well as those who offered support from across Manx Care, the Emergency Services Joint Control Room and other emergency services.

Manx Care says: 'Across the day, the Emergency Services Joint Control Room logged 82 incidents, coordinating the deployment of resources and providing vital information to support decision-making and system planning in real time.

'Emergency ambulance crews delivered face-to-face care to well over 70 patients, responding to a wide range of needs from critical, life‑threatening emergencies to complex but less urgent presentations, while maintaining a consistently high standard of care.

'The clinical navigator team triaged more than 20 calls, with the majority safely managed at a lower priority or referred directly to alternative services. This played a crucial role in ensuring that the most seriously unwell patients received a timely response. In addition, welfare call-backs, supported by the Joint Control Room team, helped keep patients safe while awaiting further assistance.'

The Divisional Director for Ambulance and Transfer Services, Will Bellamy, says: "This was an exceptional day in every sense, and I could not be prouder of our teams.

"From call handlers and clinical navigators to ambulance crews, operational support and command staff, everyone worked together under sustained pressure to ensure patients received safe, timely and compassionate care.

"It truly demonstrated the professionalism, resilience and commitment of our service."
