Amendments tabled in Lisvane debate

Parliament debates constitutional reform

A raft of amendments have been tabled as Tynwald debates the Island's biggest constitutional reform in recent history.

Speaker of the House of Keys, Juan Watterson, has suggested a five member committee - chaired by him - be formed to re-examine some of the proposals put forward in the Lisvane report.

He conducted a far-reaching review into the workings of the Island's parliament.

Mr Watterson has also called for the Lord Bishop to lose his vote in Tynwald; for public views to be considered before a programme for government is finalised and for Legislative Council pay to be reviewed.

However, Ayre and Michael MHK Alfred Cannan said it was time for action not further committees and suggested only four of the 11 recommendations be re-visited, stating Lord Lisvane had painted a clear picture for the future.

There were also a number of calls to ensure the Bishop retains his vote.

In her maiden speech, MLC Jane Poole-Wilson said the next step needed to be properly thought-out.

And she had this to say about the future of the upper house she was recently elected to.
