Amnesty International IoM to hold 'series of demonstrations at key locations and events'

Lobbying group hope to prompt a firmer stance from Government on Israel-Gaza conflict

A group of Manx lobbyists say they are to host a 'series of demonstrations at key locations and events over the coming month' further calling on the Isle of Man Government to 'send a clear message of concern' to the UK as the conflict in Gaza rages on.

In a statement, Amnesty International Isle of Man says Manx lawmakers have failed to amply critique the UK's support of Israel.

The group says it believes Tynwald has "had three parliamentary opportunities to extricate us from complicity in the genocide but has chosen to stand firmly in line with the UK's deliberate assistance in the slaughter and butchery of an entire population".
It says by not breaking ties with the UK stance, Tynwald is "aligning itself fully with the UK’s complicity in infanticide, genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and starvation of civilians".

Chair of Amnesty IOM, Phil Matthews, said: "Everyone needs to wake up to what is happening - there are still innocent people that can be saved from this evil madness - but it is too late for all those cruelly slaughtered or seriously maimed when some governments (including ours) chose to stand with Israel."

The group is calling on the Government to 'send a clear message of concern' to the UK; and has referenced a letter sent by the Chief Minister Alfred Cannan on 24 June.
Mr Cannan wrote to the UK Government highlighting 'mounting concern' on the Isle of Man regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
The move came following a failed Tynwald debate on the topic in the days before.
Amnesty International Isle of Man however denounced the strength of that letter, saying: "Sadly, all his letter did was express 'concern about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza' and at the same time he endorsed the stated position of the United Kingdom."
The group is hoping to prompt a firmer stance from the Government going forward.
VIGILS

Amnesty International Isle of Man has been holding vigils on Douglas promenade every Friday 'for the Palestinian people' for seven months.

These vigils often take on particular themes.

For instance, on Friday 5 September they 'paid tribute' to the Global Sumud Flotilla - a co-ordinated, nonviolent fleet of mostly small vessels sailing from ports across the Mediterranean in an attempt to deliver aid and supplies to Gaza.

Those in attendance laid out paper boats to symbolise those on the journey.

Manx Radio has approached the Isle of Man Government for comment.
